This is a Mystery Science Theater 3000 episode called “Invasion of the Neptune Men.”
The movie shown in this episode is called “Invasion of the Neptune Men.” It is a Japanese movie from the 50s, in which the Neptune Men, a generic alien force, invades and attacks Earth (a seemingly transparent metaphor for America fighting Japan in WW2 just a few years earlier). Plucky kids are the only ones who seem competent to spot the aliens, underlining Japan’s creepy country-wide Peter Pan complex. A bunch of scientists pour all of their resources into a science/magic barrier that blocks the attacks of the Neptune Men. There are many scenes where the power of the science barrier fades and grows in a contrived fashion, until eventually some shallow flamboyant fruity silly Japanese guy wearing a cape and who flies a space ship comes in and beats the bad guys.
The movie itself is INCREDIBLY boring, and the episode itself suffers for it.
There was another movie MST3K aired around this time called Prince of Space. In it, a fruity flamboyant silly Japanese guy wearing a cape and who flies a space ship comes in to beat a bunch of alien bad guys that are a transparent metaphor for etc etc, power levels are marveled at, and just when it seems the city is going to be obliterated, the hero pulls victory out of his ass.

What’s more, a pack of diapers is 95 dollars and one head of lettuce is 26 dollars. Inuit people are starving in a country known for it’s generosity.

YES, this is real.
the way the Canadian government treats the native people here is actually disgusting. The reserves sometimes have a lower life expectancy and the general living quality of third world countries. This isn’t common knowledge and it needs to be.
The Canadian Native population totals just over 1 Million. For that, the Government churns out nearly $40 Billion per year in funding.
There is no shortage of programs available to help Native people get whatever they need. From 100% subsidized post-secondary education, to $20,000 cheques on 18th Birthdays… Don’t cry for me, Argentina.
I got my tenure in dealing with Aboriginals in the criminal justice system, where my educational and professional background lies. Native offenders get highly reduced sentencing, if any, for crimes committed. Hell, they even have their own correctional facilities, called ‘Healing Lodges’, that look more like summer camp grounds than prisons.
The Government spends nearly 30x the amount per native than it does on the non-native population. However — Many of them do indeed live in horrendous conditions.
Why? Not because the Government doesn’t give them enough money or programs, absolutely not.
Rather, because native reserves operate almost like little countries — They are self-determining. Their Governments are their own, their laws are their own, and the Feds dare not do anything about it. Essentially, the Government passes out money to individual reservations, and the reservations then have the responsibility of running their own affairs. This kind of institutional organization has been a complete and utter failure.
Here’s an example… About two years ago people were up in arms over a small, Northern Ontario reserve called Attawapiskat. People were living in sub-0 temperatures with no heat, no insulation in their houses (if they had a house at all), and no water.
It was sub-human conditions for these people and the general population was outraged.
Upon further investigation, we started to find out that there was gross financial misconduct that this reserve’s council was trying to cover up. The Government called for a third-party audit of the reserve, because it had sent nearly $20,000,000 in funding to the council, with the per-person breakdown of investment being nearly $35,000 for each member of the 1,200 person village.
What the audit found was shocking. Namely, almost 80% of all money moved did not have any kind of paper work to show what happened to it or where it went.
Files that did exist showed that the Chief and Council Members were being paid like kings. And that the Chief had hired her own boyfriend (a man who had previously declared bankruptcy) as the financial manager for the reserve, at a salary of almost $1,000 per DAY.
Long story short — Money was being spent frivolously. While the kids didn’t even have a school to go to, the council spent $100,000 on a new Zamboni for their ice rink. It was a mess.
But what came of it? The Government being called racist for asking for an audit into the reserve’s finances before they gave them any more money.
There were riots and protests, the whole lot.
Attawapiskat is not an exception. It is the rule. Government money gets poured into the Native trough, and there is not a single result to account for, and none is expected lest we are called racist.
Who loses? The average joe’s living on those reserves who are told that feeling upset that their Chief and Council Members are living in mansions while they can barely feed their families is a form of internalized racism.
Special interest groups make it their life’s work to ensure kids on reserve grow up angry at the Government and society, rather than angry at the corruption in their own ranks. It disenfranchises them, leads them to frayed lives, and restarts the cycle of dependency over and over.
The very last thing Native people need is more Government money in their lives. Individual reserves must be accountable to the taxpayer, and Councils to their individual bandmembers who should be able to hold them to account without fear of retaliation or excommunication.
